FolkArt® Paint FAQS

On what surfaces can I use FolkArt® Outdoor paints?  Do I need to prepare the surface?

·         Uncoated and Enameled Metal: Wash to remove dirt and wipe with alcohol to remove oil.

·         Galvanized Tin: Wash to remove dirt and wipe with alcohol to remove oil.

·         Wood:  Sand and seal before painting.

·         Rusted Metal:  Wash to remove dirt and wipe with alcohol to remove oil.

·         Terra Cotta:  Seal before painting.

·         Concrete:  (Exterior):  Pressure wash surface if possible to remove all soiled areas.  Let dry completely for about 2 days before painting.  (Interior): Clean floor of all dirt.  If it is a new floor you will need to neutralize the concrete with muriatic acid solution. Follow label directions.

·         Bricks:  Clean bricks with soap and water. Rinse thoroughly. Let completely dry before painting.

Can FolkArt Outdoor paints be used on wicker?
Yes, for decorative purposes or spot designs on functional pieces, such as a chair.  FolkArt Outdoor is not recommended as an all over paint for wicker.

How can I apply FolkArt Outdoor colors?
You can stencil, sponge or brush on opaque and metallic colors. Brush-on colors can be stroked and blended like other FolkArt® paints.  Apply dimensional color straight from the bottle using the writer tip.

Does FolkArt Outdoor really work?
Absolutely.  FolkArt Outdoor is formulated as a permanent outdoor paint. By the nature of the acrylic polymers used to make FolkArt Outdoor, it is both UV and weather resistant. Self-sealing when properly cured (48 hours for brush-on, 72 hours for dimensional), it is scuff and scratch resistant under normal handling conditions. FolkArt Outdoor dries to a satin sheen.

Can I basecoat with FolkArt Outdoor paint?
Yes. If you are basecoating concrete, such as a statue, a lime neutralizer is needed. Household vinegar works fine. Coat the concrete with vinegar, let it dry, wash it off, dry thoroughly, then it's ready to paint.
It is not ideal to basecoat a large concrete area subject to foot traffic (e.g., a patio).

Can I use water with FolkArt Outdoor?

Water should not be used with FolkArt Outdoor. Adding water will reduce the adhesion to the surface of your project.

Can FolkArt Outdoor be used with other paint products?
No, mixing FolkArt Outdoor with other paint products will compromise the color, durability and other key features of the paint.

Is a sealer or varnish needed with FolkArt Outdoor paint?
No, unless used on a water saturated surface, such as a bird bath. The FolkArt lacquers are ideal for outdoor use and are compatible with FolkArt Outdoor paint.

How is FolkArt Outdoor different from Apple Barrel® Gloss™?
Apple Barrel Gloss was developed to achieve a high, gloss sheen, while FolkArt Outdoor has a satin sheen when dry. The paint flow of FolkArt Outdoor was formulated for decorative painting with better hide and better adhesion for strength against the elements.

How long does it take FolkArt Outdoor dimensional paint to cure? 72 hours.

How long does it take FolkArt Outdoor brush-on paint to cure? 48 hours.
